“An examination of her body after death”

by Glen Colquhoun

In the poem “An examination of her body after death” the author Glen Colquhoun writes about his feelings and thoughts while an examination of a close friend. He uses the language features denial with negatives and to explain what she used to look like and what she looks like now he is using metaphors. The main idea of the poem is to show the denial and he remembrance of Colquhoun.

One of the important ideas in the poem is denial. The author uses negatives at the start of every verse to show this:
“You are not her shoulders”
etc.
You can easily see that the word “not” is very important for Colquhoun to show his denial, because he repeats it. He is also using the negatives to tell us what part of the body the verse will be about. The usage of negatives I this particular poem really helped me to understand the main idea, because it shows very good that the writer can’t accept the death of a close friend.

Another important idea in the poem “Examination” is Colquhoun’s remembrance of the person that died. The author shows this with metaphors. You can see this very well in verse four:
“The sound of birds has gone away.
So bold! These two fat worms now hungry for the dirt.”
There are actually two metaphors in this verse, the first one shows what he remembers. “The sound of birds has gone away.” With this metaphor Colquhoun is telling us that her voice was as beautiful as the sounds of birds. He’s also telling us that this wonderful voice is now gone forever.
The second metaphor, “These two fat worms now hungry for the dirt”, describes what she looks like in the examination. The “two fat worms” are her lips and “now hungry for the dirt” means that they basically can’t wait to get buried. This second metaphor is a drastic contrast to the first metaphor because it shows that death can even destroy the best things about someone. These techniques helped me understand his remembrance, because he is explaining what she used to be like and what she looks like now.

The two main ideas of “Examination” are denial and remembrance and he used negatives and metaphors as language features to show this. The author’s purpose is to express his grief for a loved one. With the techniques he used Colquhoun created a tone of frustration and despair what makes the author’s purpose even more obvious.
